What Color Shutters for Red Brick House

  • S Reams

I think Hale Navy could work well!

I think that a classic black or a dark red would be best. Your home is beautiful!

Of those you list I would pick Chelsea Gray.

Thanks, all! No one is a fan of the Wedgewood Gray? What about Stormy Sky?

  • Denita

^^^This is BM Wedgewood Gray. I like it as a color, but I don't see where it would enhance your home painting the shutters this color. I think you need to go classic with a black or a very deep dark green (nearly black). JMO.

Hi Lindsey, I think Stormy Sky would be the better choice of those two but even darker. The Wedgewood Gray just doesn't work for me. With your brick color, white trim and style of house (pretty!) I think black would be classic. If not black, a really dark charcoal. With the black door, it would all pull together, especially with your roof. I would also think about painting the storm door black with the sidelights and trim white.

I agree with Denita regarding a very dark green. What you have now is too light and "Christmas-y" with the red brick.

For your classic brick home, I'd go with black shutters and black front door, including the storm door. Another good choice would be a deep navy. Somehow, the lighter colors just don't have enough oomph for the size, scale, and style of your lovely home.

So Onyx, perhaps? Or is there a deep charcoal someone could recommend? I love the idea of painting the storm door. I'm not crazy about navy, but that's just a personal preference.

    Yes...something like Onyx would work.

I know it's a different style house than yours, but this is a good example of red brick, white trim and black shutters looking great.

For a green shade, you might look at Ben Moore's Tarrytown Green. It can work nicely with red brick, such as here. I still think black would be sooooo nice.

I would agree with the black. I did have BM Essex Green shutters and they looked like black from the street so that may be color to look at. Definitely paint the storm door to match the door.

So say I go with black shutters (in Onyx? Or something similar?). What about a more fun color for the door and storm door? A minty blue? Or a bright bold red or yellow?

  • Catherine S

    Definitely black shutters...classic, elegant.

Try using ColorSnap or one of the other paint visualizers; they're pretty easy and so helpful. Using the example above with black shutters, I tried a few different colors, just to see how they look. I still prefer black for the front door, but something in the teal family looks good.

Change the shutters first, as recommended. Then consider the door color. One step at a time.

I couldn't help but think your house would look so much better with a proper porch & new landscaping. Here is a visual with a porch and a black door!

I agree you should try using one of the paint sites to try colors. I made three.

    Someone suggested Tarrytown Green

    ^Caribbean Teal

^Deep Royal. I think in person it might look too purple but I like the look here.

I like the black shutter with the black door, I have to say though if you are going to paint your door black and then have a black storm door as well you will have a ton of heat building up between them and that is not good for your front door. I would go without a storm door.

I like your shutters …looks perfect with the green lawn. I would paint the front door green, as well.

A slightly darker gray which goes well with the roof.

@JudyG Designs, sometimes I think the green looks fine and other time I feel like it looks rather dated. And maybe I just don't love the color. Since we got the new roof, I was thinking this would be the right time to update the curb appeal.

love the black shutter suggestion and yes you could choose a nice color for the door. that emerald green that Judy showed would be a stunner w/the black. Or do a cherry red door. just make it glossy.

If you picked a Blue/Black and planted some gorgeous magenta flowers near the front, it would look like this

    yellow is also an option

these should give you some ideas of what color looks like what!

Anyone have recommendations for specific shades of black for the shutters? Also, any ideas for a teal/blue door option?

I really like this combination, as an idea. Not sure what the specific colors are, though. Any guesses?

could be a color like "Birds Egg", BM on the door.

For a black, if you want super black, deep black, get the darkest black and then tell the paint guy to tint it extra black. that's what I did and you can't believe the difference.

Another black color I like is Beluga, from Behr. It's a very pretty deep black w/almost magenta undertones.

We probably need black shutters on our brick house, but would like something that would not fade as quickly on our south-facing home. No one else sees a problem with black and fading? Is there an alternative?

It's beautiful, but I've read that saturated colors on wood shutters need repainting in just a few years (ugh). Would a more medium shade (of blue or green maybe) hold up longer? Could that be aesthetically pleasing on a traditional red brick house?

  • greenvelvettree

A beautiful house no matter what color the shutters! I too have a red brick house with southern exposure for mid day. When we moved in the shutters were faded blue green. After that we painted the shutters about the same green. The painter didn't want me to match his client's house across the street. we have a recently done same gray roof and although I love black on some other houses, not all houses and not on my house. I am considering a quiet light blue that has a lot of gray in it. The columns are getting repainted off white, maybe Toque or Shoji SW. The shutters will relate back to the roof which has blue and green in it and the shutters won't fade so quickly. Our house isn't as pretty as Lyndsey's but I will give you a picture. I understand how that she seems to see the blue in her roof and a friend designer even mentioned adding some blue flowers that relate back to the shutters.

btw we are changing the door out to a 3/4 glass style from lowes and need correct width shutters. It never ends.

The one circled in red would be really pretty. You could have little yellow bushes out side along your exterior which could be really cool and compliment your existing colors!
