How Does Sam Turn Dean Back Into a Human
Supernatural season 11 premieres Wednesday, October 7. But before that, we have your season 10 refresher.
With less than a week to go before Supernatural season 11 premieres, we look at the top 10 things to remember from season 10.
Demon Dean
Supernatural season 10 began with Dean's disappearance with Crowley after season 9 closed with his resurrection as a demon. After gallivanting with the King of Hell for a time, the relationship became strained. Meanwhile, Sam refused to give up looking for his brother. Sam eventually tracked his brother down and, with Castiel's help, used the demon-curing process from the trials to cure Dean.
Episode 200
The fifth episode of season 10 was the 200th episode of Supernatural. In celebration of the milestone, the show celebrated with a musical…ish episode. The brothers stumbled across a hunt at an all-girls' high school in which the drama club was putting on a production based on the Supernatural books. Yep.
Dean vs. Cole
One of the wrinkles in Sam's search for Dean came in the form of Cole, whose father Dean killed when he was younger. Cole kidnapped Sam in an effort to lure out Dean, but Dean being a demon at the time complicated matters. After Dean was cured and the two crossed paths again, Dean revealed the truth to Cole: His father was a monster, and Dean hunted him. Cole would eventually team up with the Winchesters on a hunt later in the season.
Return of Metatron
The Scribe of God did not rot away long in Heaven's prison before becoming important again. Assuming he knew something about removing the Mark of Cain from Dean, Castiel and Sam plotted a jail break from Heaven — with the help of Bobby. Castiel removed Metatron's grace, making him mortal; with Sam threatening to kill him, Metatron confessed he didn't know a cure. However, he and Castiel searched out Castiel's remaining grace. Though Castiel recovered his grace, Metatron stole the Demon Tablet and got away.
Castiel and Claire
Another running story through season 10 was that of Claire Novak. After Hannah left her vessel to return to Heaven, Castiel decided to make amends to the Novak family. However, it turned out Jimmy's wife, Amelia, had been missing for years, and Claire became a teenage delinquent. Eventually, the Winchesters and Castiel helped Claire find her mother, who had been kidnapped by a group of angels who fed on humans. During the rescue attempt, though, Amelia was killed. While she reunited with Jimmy in Heaven, the Winchesters sent Claire to stay with Jody Mills.
Charlie's return… and death
In season 10, Charlie returned from Oz, first split into good and evil halves. After her two halves were reunited, she offered to help Sam look into the Mark of Cain. In her search for the Book of the Damned, though, she caught the attention of the Styne family. They eventually hunted her down and, despite Sam's and Castiel's attempts to protect her, murdered her. This would send Dean on a rage-induced spiral of violence against the Stynes.
Dean kills Cain
The Winchesters and Castiel were alerted that a single family line was being murdered — that of Cain. Having fallen back under the sway of the Mark, Cain was slaughtering his own family line to satiate the Mark's bloodlust. The Winchesters, Castiel, and Crowley worked together to lay a trap for the Father of Murder. Dean confronted him and eventually killed him, though Cain warned Dean that he would kill everyone he cares about, even Sam.
Rowena vs. Crowley
Season 10 also introduced Rowena, an extremely powerful witch who went rogue from the Grand Coven. She is also the mother of Fergus McLeod, the human who would become Crowley. After realizing her connection to Crowley, she attempted to manipulate him to her own ends. After failing to drive a wedge between Crowley and the Winchesters, she left. After Sam kidnapped her to get her to translate the Book of the Damned, she eventually cast the spell that freed Dean of the Mark of Cain. She then cast an attack dog spell on Castiel, siccing him on Crowley.
Releasing the Darkness
Season 10 closed with Dean asking Death to put him somewhere he couldn't harm anyone. The cost was Sam's death, as Death knew Sam would never stop trying to free his brother. Though Dean was initially willing to pay this price, when faced with Sam, he couldn't do it. Instead, he killed Death. Moments later, he was freed of the Mark of Cain. However, the Mark of Cain turned out to be the lock to a prison holding a pre-Biblical evil that God and his archangels locked away: The Darkness. In the closing moments of season 10, the Darkness descended.
